Netflix Shows to Fulfill Your Foodie Wanderlust

If you are a foodie, like me, and also feel that you can travel through food these shows might just be for you!

Fuel your passion with this short list on top Netflix shows about food and travel that you can enjoy during the quarantine.

SALT FAT ACID HEAT

Concept:

Follow Samin Nosrat, chef, culinary instructor, and food columnist as she brings up her favorite food concepts that make a dish.

What I love:

Samin really impressed me with her passion and the fact she will speak with the locals in their language- oftentimes fluently, othertimes working really hard to say everything perfectly; from Italian, to Spanish, to Japanese. Loved that she talked about her Pakistani background often. A serious plus, the views and food are beautiful.

Samin made me want to learn where all of the ingredients we use come from. If you get really into this, she also has a book that she created with her Illustrative partner.

What I didn’t really like:

If you are squeamish watch out for the fat section. Seriously. I might have skipped over the butchering section just a bit- and yes, I know, my married name does mean butcher in French.

UGLY DELICIOUS

Concept:

From David Chang, the chef behind Momufoku and the creator of now discontinued Lucky Peach food magazine, watch as he travels to understand the concept of food. Spoilers, first episode starts with what is a pizza? and delves into different concepts and even accessible brands in the US.

What I love:

This is a seriously interesting concept. David shares his love of food and culture, he deep dives into food.  Through this show you are really learning about food and culture, and the multicultural influences you don’t always know about. Love that he also shares his Korean background as well. He honestly made me more curious about food and their origins.

What I didn’t really like:

I didn’t really like: start of the second season talks more about having kids in restaurants. Cool to see chefs doing things, but I was kind of bored after a while. I wanted more about food!

RESTAURANTS ON THE EDGE

The show I’m currently watching- I’m 5 episodes in but this is already great! I didn’t know the creators, chef Dennis Prescott and restaurateur Nick Liberato, but have been following Designer Karin Bohn since before the Pandemic

Concept:

Fixing restaurants in the most amazing locations around the world, including Malta, Hong Kong, and Austria.

What I love:

Learn about the food from certain regions, the specialties, and also unique authentic architectural things. It has some Salt Fat Acid Heat vibe mixed with a decor and restaurant show. Willing to see what else they bring.

What I didn’t really like:

They generalize some facts, so if you are into intercultural things or happen to be a Geography nerd you might be annoyed by some comments. As a German – American I was very annoyed at how they only showed Austrian stereotypes, as I know Austria is a lot more than that.
